The client envisioned a next-generation vehicle marketplace that eliminates the frustration of traditional car-buying platforms. They approached us to build NeighborCars — a trust-first, real-time vehicle matching mobile app where buyers don’t search for cars, the platform delivers live match alerts automatically based on their preferences.
With rising fraud and scams in online vehicle marketplaces, the client needed a platform built on verified seller identity, transparent listings, and structured buyer-seller communication. NeighborCars was designed to shift user behaviour from active searching to passive, alert-driven discovery — making the car-buying experience safer, smarter, and seamless.

Challenges
1. Building a Fraud-Free & Trust-First Marketplace
- Designing a platform where unverified sellers and fake listings are eliminated through a multi-level verification system covering email, phone, government ID, and vehicle ownership validation.
- Creating a visible trust layer — Verified Seller Badges and higher ranking for verified users — without discouraging new sellers from joining the platform.
- Preventing scam behaviour such as off-platform conversation attempts, spam outreach, and bulk messaging through behaviour-based risk detection.
2. Shifting User Behaviour from Active Search to Passive Discovery
- Engineering a continuous live match engine that monitors new listings, price changes, and location proximity in real time — so buyers never need to manually search.
- Balancing exact match alerts vs similar match alerts with clear transparency labels like "Close but not exact match" so users trust the notification system.
- Designing an alert-driven engagement model that keeps users returning without causing notification fatigue.
3. Structured Communication Without Open Messaging Risks
- Building a context-based chat system linked directly to listings, with pre-defined safe prompts like "Is this still available?" and "Can we meet at a safe location?"
- Preventing unverified or harmful conversations through seller-side buyer reporting directly from chat.
- Integrating safe meeting guidance and safety tips across the entire user experience without making the platform feel restrictive.

Technology Stack
• UI/UX: Designed in Figma with complete wireframes, high-fidelity screens, buyer & seller journey mapping, interactive clickable prototype, and a full design system covering colors, typography, and components — ensuring consistency across every screen before development begins.
• Frontend: Built using React Native to deliver a single-codebase, native-like mobile experience across both iOS and Android — enabling high-performance UI with smooth interactions and real-time state management for live match alerts and notifications.
• Backend: Powered by Node.js (Express / NestJS) infrastructure to securely handle user data, listing management, matching engine logic, payment processing, and real-time notification delivery at scale.
• Database & Real-Time Services: PostgreSQL for structured data storage combined with Firebase for real-time chat, live notifications, and instant buyer-seller communication — ensuring zero-delay match alert delivery.
• Payments: Integrated Stripe / RevenueCat to manage initial listing fees, monthly renewals, auto-renew options, and secure transaction history for sellers.
• Maps & Location: Google Maps SDK powering geo-based vehicle discovery, location radius filtering, and map-view listing pins for proximity-based matching.
• Notifications: Firebase FCM / OneSignal delivering real-time push notifications for live match alerts, price drop alerts, seller demand insights, and chat updates.
