About the Client and Project
The client is a US-based health-tech startup on a mission to make addiction recovery accessible, stigma-free, and science-backed. They approached us to build Choice — a mobile-first recovery companion that helps individuals quit or gradually wean off addictive substances through structured goal-setting, AI support, and peer community.
With millions of people struggling with addiction and limited access to affordable therapy, the client needed an app that could meet users where they are — without judgment. Choice was built to be that daily accountability partner: personal, powerful, and peer-driven.

- Designing an experience that doesn't feel clinical or judgmental for users dealing with addiction — a deeply personal and stigmatized issue.
- Creating the "Dragon" metaphor system to reframe addiction as a beatable enemy, making the emotional journey feel empowering rather than shameful.
- Building separate, customized goal-setting flows for different substance types (pills, alcohol, weed, mushrooms) without making the app feel overwhelming.
2. Behavioral Accountability Without Pressure
- Engineering a daily dose logging system (Super Wean Mode) that motivates users to log honestly without triggering guilt or dropout.
- Balancing Cold Turkey and Wean modes so users feel in control of their own recovery pace rather than being forced into one method.
- Designing streak and progress tracking (e.g. "1,092 pills NOT taken since Day 1") that reinforces positive behavior without punishing relapse.
3. AI Chat & Community Safety
- Integrating an AI peer chat that clearly communicates "I'm A Peer, Not A Doctor" — managing user expectations and avoiding medical liability.
- Building The Trenches community feed with anonymity-first design to encourage honest sharing without fear of identity exposure.
- Ensuring encrypted data storage and privacy-compliant handling of sensitive addiction-related user data.

- Integrate AI Support Responsibly Deploy an AI chat companion that acts as a peer, not a doctor — providing emotional support and guidance while maintaining clear boundaries around medical advice.

- UI&UX: Designed in Figma with a dark gamified aesthetic – custom Dragon illustrations, neon green typography, and component-based design system ensuring consistency across all screens.
- Frontend: Built using Flutter to deliver a single-codebase, native-like mobile experience across iOS and Android – enabling the dark, high-performance UI with smooth animations and real-time state management.
- Backend: Powered by Node.js infrastructure to securely handle user data, habit tracking logic, dose logging, streak calculations, and real-time community feed interactions.
- AI Integration: Grok API integrated as the AI Chat companion — positioned as a peer support system with clear “I’m A Peer, Not A Doctor” guardrails to manage user expectations responsibly.
- Real-time Communication: WebSocket-based architecture for The Trenches community feed and AI Chat — enabling live peer interactions and instant message delivery.
- Cloud Infrastructure & Security: Deployed on cloud with encrypted data storage, secure RESTful APIs, and strict privacy controls to protect sensitive addiction-related user information.
