About the Client and Project
The client is a health-focused entrepreneur with a clear vision to help people overcome food addiction through sustainable daily habits — not calorie counting or meal tracking.
With firsthand understanding of how food addiction impacts people with serious health conditions like diabetes and obesity, the client approached us with a focused goal: build a mobile app that helps users build daily and weekly nutrition systems that last. The result is Viva — a live React Native app available on iOS, built on Firebase, supporting users on their 90-day recovery journey.

Challenges
1. Behavior Change & Accountability
- Building an app that drives real long-term behavior change in food addiction — not just short-term motivation — required a deeply thought-out daily accountability system.
- Ensuring users stayed consistent with meal planning and daily pledges without the app feeling like a strict calorie counter or meal tracker.
- Designing a streak system that motivates users through 90-day recovery milestones without causing discouragement after a relapse.
- Balancing simplicity of the UI with the complexity of tracking meals, pledges, and streaks simultaneously on a single home screen.
2. User Experience & Design
- Users dealing with food addiction needed an interface that felt supportive and clean — replicating the Clean 30 UI while applying a completely custom color system (#002244 deep navy and #FB4F14 orange).
- The app had to work seamlessly across both iOS and Android platforms with a single React Native codebase, maintaining consistent UI/UX on all device sizes.
- Designing the Panic Button craving flow — with motivational messaging and fake-door features (community chat, meditation, AI therapist) — required careful UX decision-making to validate future features without breaking trust.
3. Technical Architecture & Security
- Building a fully Firebase-based architecture with no custom backend server meant all authentication, data storage, and real-time updates had to be handled entirely through Firebase SDK.
- Securing user data — including daily meal plans, pledge signatures, and personal health goals — required strict Firestore security rules ensuring user-specific write access at all times.
- Implementing a finger-signature-based daily pledge system and streak logic that persists accurately across sessions required careful Firestore data structuring under /users/{uid}/dailyPlans/{date}.
4. Scalability & Future Growth
- Architecting the MVP in a way that supports future phases — including onboarding, paywall integration via Superwall, Google & Apple authentication, PostHog analytics, and AWS backend migration — without requiring a full rebuild.
- Validating core features through a fake-door testing approach to measure user demand before investing in full development of community, meditation, and AI therapist modules.

After a thorough understanding of the requirements, we decided to build a focused health & recovery mobile app that would:
- Help users manage and overcome food addiction through a structured 90-day daily accountability and streak tracking system
- Enable users to plan and record daily meals — Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks — without functioning as a calorie counter or traditional meal tracker
- Deliver a daily pledge system where users commit to their recovery journey through a finger-signature on their device screen
- Provide immediate craving support through a Panic Button feature with motivational messages and haptic feedback for emergency situations
